In early 2021, Save Vietnam’s Wildlife (SVW) acknowledged a very special case of a pangolin with gunshot wounds. This pangolin, which was rescued in a smuggling case in Dien Bien province, was brought to the rescue center with 14 lead bullets on its body.

Động vật hoang dã trong thực phẩm và buôn bán thú cưng
Thịt động vật hoang dã (hay thịt rừng) thường được tiêu thụ tại các quốc gia Châu Phi và Châu Á và được vận chuyển, mua bán trên toàn quốc hoặc cả toàn cầu. Những loại thịt rừng thường được tiêu thụ ở Việt Nam và châu Á gồm tê tê, chim rừng, rắn, khỉ, cầy hương và rùa biển. Khi được chế biến không hợp vệ sinh hoặc được bảo quản kém kết hợp với việc được phân phối toàn cầu, thịt rừng có thể tạo ra thảm họa truyền nhiễm dịch bệnh. Việc tiêu thụ thịt rừng và thú vui nuôi các động vật hoang dã độc lạ làm thú cưng còn là mối đe dọa gây ra những hậu quả nghiêm trọng cho cả con người và hệ sinh thái. Khi động vật hoang dã trưởng thành bị săn bắt để lấy thịt, con của chúng bị bắt và bán làm thú cưng tại các chợ động vật hoang dã bất hợp pháp trên khắp thế giới. Các loại động vật hoang dã như linh trưởng, bò sát, chim rừng thường bị bắt giữ làm thú cưng và là những loài có nguy cơ mang nhiều mầm bệnh lạ nguy hiểm có khả năng lây nhiễm cao cho con người.
Động vật hoang dã trong thuốc
Một số loại thuốc đông y có thể chứa thành phần từ bộ phận của động vật hoang dã, bao gồm các loài có nguy cơ tuyệt chủng như sừng tê giác, vảy tê tê, mật gấu, xương hổ, xạ hương hươu và sừng linh dương Saiga. Một số loài động vật hoang dã khác còn được sử dụng toàn phần để làm thuốc trong đông y bao gồm tê tê, cá sấu, rùa, rắn, thằn lằn, và các loài linh trưởng. Những sản phẩm này còn được sản xuất ở dạng thuốc viên nén hoặc thuốc con nhộng để hợp pháp hóa khi đi qua biên giới quốc tế.
Ngà voi, sừng, răng, xương các loài
Một trong những sản phẩm động vật bị buôn lậu nhiều nhất là ngà voi. Ngà voi được coi là một sản phẩm xa xỉ ở nhiều nước châu Á bao gồm cả Việt Nam. Ngà voi có thể được bán dưới dạng các trang sức, bức tượng nhỏ, vòng đeo tay hoặc đũa. Sự tiêu thụ các sản phẩm ngà voi thúc đẩy mạnh việc săn trộm và đang đẩy loài voi đến nguy cơ tuyệt chủng. Ngoài ra, răng từ hổ, gấu, cá voi, kỳ lân biển, hải cẩu, hải mã và cá sấu quý hiếm có nguy cơ tuyệt chủng cũng được bán như đồ trang sức, tượng hoặc làm bùa chú. Việc sử dụng một bộ phận nhỏ của một con vật cũng có thể hoàn toàn tước đi mạng sống của nó.
Lông, mỏ chim và chim sống
Sản phẩm từ chim gồm lông hoặc mỏ chim được sử dụng cho các mặt hàng trang trí mới lạ. Nhiều loài chim trên toàn cầu và tại Việt Nam đang gần như tuyệt chủng. Tình trạng mua bán chim rừng nguyên con, hoặc các sản phẩm có nguồn gốc từ chim rừng chính là nguyên nhân chính đẩy các loài chim vào tuyệt chủng và tiếp tay cho tệ nạn buôn lậu động vật hoang dã, cũng như góp phần làm lây lan các dịch bệnh như cúm gia cầm.
Da bò sát
Da bò sát từ rắn và cá sấu thường được sử dụng trong các mặt hàng thời trang để làm túi xách, ví, thắt lưng, giày dép và mũ. Hầu hết các loài cá sấu hiện nay đang bị đe dọa tuyệt chủng, các trang trại hiện đang nhân giống chúng để lấy thịt và da. Cá sấu thường được nuôi nhốt với số lượng lớn trong các hồ bê tông nhân tạo chật hẹp với điều kiện sống kinh khủng và sau cùng sẽ nhận được cái chết bi thảm. Nhiều loài rắn bị bẫy và bắt trong tự nhiên và bị tàn sát vô nhân đạo để lấy da và thịt.
Lông thú
Lông thú thường được sử dụng trong các mặt hàng thời trang, nhưng chúng cũng có thể được sử dụng làm đồ trang sức, bùa chú may mắn hay trong các vật liệu truyền thống. Lông thú có nguồn gốc từ động vật hoang dã có thể đến từ những loài mèo lớn như hổ, báo, báo đốm, chúng thường bị bẫy, bị lột da, và bỏ mặc đến chết trong đau đớn. Nhiều lông thú được sử dụng trong trang trí và áo khoác trong các cửa hàng thời trang sẽ có nguồn gốc từ các trang trại chăn nuôi trong điều kiện kinh khủng và bị lột da một cách vô nhân đạo.
Rùa và mai rùa
Các loài rùa biển ở Việt Nam đều nằm trong danh sách các loài động vật quý hiếm cần được bảo vệ và bị cấm thương mại trên toàn thế giới. Rùa và mai rùa được chế tạo thành các vật phẩm như giày dép, túi xách, lược chải tóc, hộp đựng thuốc lá, kẹp tóc, gọng kính và đồ trang sức, hoặc toàn bộ mai rùa làm vật trang trí. Trứng và thịt rùa còn được sử dụng để làm thức ăn và sản phẩm chăm sóc da. Hiện nay, các loài rùa biển ở Việt Nam đang bị suy giảm nghiêm trọng, trong đó, Vích suy giảm 75%, Đồi mồi và Đồi mồi dứa suy giảm 95%, Rùa da suy giảm 99%, so với những năm 1980.

Wildlife in foods and pet trade
Bushmeat is the meat from wild animals consumed in many African and Asian countries. The common wild meat that is often consumed illegally in Vietnam and around Asia are pangolins, wild birds, wild snakes, primates, civets and sea turtles. The poorly cooked and preserved wild meat is illegally shipped across the country or worldwide which creates potential conditions to spread dangerous zoonotic diseases. The consumption of wild meat and the desire to keep “exotic” wild animals as pets go hand-in-hand and are a growing threat with major consequences, for humans and ecosystem health alike. When adult animals are hunted for meat, baby animals are captured and sold as pets in illegal wildlife markets around the world. Wild animals kept as pets such as primates, reptiles, and birds, commonly carry pathogens that cause serious diseases to humans.
Wildlife products in traditional medicines
Some traditional medicines may contain parts and products from wild animals, including those from endangered species such as rhino horns, pangolin scales, Asiatic black bear gallbladder and bile, tiger and leopard bones, glands from musk deer, and Saiga antelope horns. Several other wild animal species are often used as a whole to make traditional medicines including pangolins, crocodiles, turtles, snakes, lizards, and primates. Even if these medicines are in tablet or capsule forms, they may be illegal for sale in most countries and illegal to take across international borders.
Products from tusks, teeth, bones, and claws from mammal and reptiles
Ivory from elephants is one of the high-profile animal products and is viewed as a luxury good in many Asian countries including Vietnam. Elephant ivory can be sold in many different forms including jewelry, carved figurines, bangles, or chopsticks. This kind of appetite for ivory products fuels poaching and is responsible for pushing elephants towards extinction. Other wildlife products such as teeth, tusks, and bones from endangered tigers, bears, whales, narwhals, seals, walruses, and crocodiles may also be sold as jewelry, carvings or as charms. These animals will have been killed purely for such small items for human consumption.
Products from birds
Bird products, including quills, feathers, or beaks may also be used for decorative or novelty items. Around the world and especially in Vietnam, many bird species are extremely close to extinction. Buying live birds or any kind of product made from their parts supports and encourages the illegal wildlife trade and potentially spreading diseases such as bird flu.
Products from reptile skins
Many reptile skins from snakes and crocodiles may be used for fashion products like handbags, wallets, belts, footwear, and hats. Most crocodile species are now so critically endangered, farms now breed them for meat and skins. The crocodiles are kept in large numbers in small concrete pools. This leads to awful, unnatural, overcrowded conditions followed by inhumane deaths. Snakes are often caught in the wild and very inhumanely slaughtered for their skins.
Products from furs
Furs from wild animals are typically used in fashion items, trinkets, lucky charms, and also in traditional materials. Wild animal furs commonly derive from endangered wild cats, including tigers, leopards, ocelots, jaguars, usually caught in traps, and left in extreme pain. Furs used in trims and coats in fashion outlets will most commonly be sourced in intensive farms. They are kept in appalling conditions and almost always skinned alive, very inhumanely.
Products from turtle and tortoise shells
All species of sea turtles are endangered and are prohibited in international trade. Boots, handbags, combs, hairbrushes, cigarette cases, spectacle frames, and jewelry or whole shells as decoration are just a few goods made from turtle and tortoise shells. Turtle and tortoise eggs and meat can also be found in food and skincare products. Recent studies show that the populations of all sea turtle species in Vietnam are in serious decline: the green turtle population has decreased by 75%, the hawksbill turtle and olive ridley turtle have decreased by 95%, the leatherback by 99%, compared to the 1980s.
