93KG OF ILLEGAL SEIZED HORN WAS SUSPECTED AS RHINO HORN

According to the Customs Department of Ho Chi Minh City, 2 packages were suspected contain up to 93 kilograms of rhino horns at Tan Son Nhat.

On December 22, 2020, Customs Department of Ho Chi Minh City, Anti-Smuggling Department cooperated with Environmental Police (Ho Chi Minh Police Department) and along with other related authorities to capture and seize the violations. Due to suspicion, the authorities had investigated storage at Tan Son Nhat airport (Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh). After the inspection, the authorities detected 2 suspicious packages which belonged to H.D.P.M Commercial Service Ltd to examine and discovered 51 horns.

Based on the early examination, all of the seized ivory was detected as Africa rhino horns, which is listed as product banned from import, sale, purchase and transportation categories under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) protection. The total weight of 51 horns is up to 93,96 kilogram. The police say these packages originated from Africa and in transit at Vietnam to delivery to Southeast Asia and some Asian countries.

Vietnam is one of the biggest transit for wildlife smuggling in the world.

If the examination shows that these horns are real rhino ivory, then 93,96kg of horns will be valued up to 40 billion VND in the black market.

The pack is under examination in the lab and classified for further handling.
