According to IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species, the number of tigers in the wild has risen from 3,726 (2015) to 5,578 tigers.

While the species is still endangered, tigers have increased steadily in the past few years, which indicates IUCN’s conservation efforts are effective.

According to IUCN, the main threats of wild tigers are poaching, habitat loss and fragmentation due to agriculture and human settlement.

IUCN also stated that “expanding and connecting protected areas, ensuring they are effectively managed, and working with local communities living in and around tiger habitats, are critical to protecting the species”.

In the latest update of the Red List of Threatened Species, 147,517 species have been reassessed, of which 41,459 are threatened with extinction, 9,065 critically endangered, 16,094 endangered, and 16,300 vulnerable.
